Building on my articles such as “Let’s stop the war for talent” I have written a book that explores how much dormant potential lies within teams and organisations and what leaders can do differently to tap into them. It’s called “Start Inspiring, Stop Driving: Unlock your team’s potential to outperform and grow” and below is an excerpt from it.

I have worked in the corporate world for 20 years, as both an employee and consultant. I have been fortunate to work with many capable and smart people; however, felt perplexed, that despite these qualities, I witnessed continually their collective talent go to waste.
Have you ever felt you were not contributing your best talents?
- Perhaps you wanted to contribute more but weren't sure where or how.
- Perhaps you were asked to do as you're told.
- Perhaps you were told not to rock the boat.
- Perhaps you weren’t supported to have a go.
- Perhaps you took a risk; it didn't work and you were punished.
- Perhaps your creative ideas were dismissed without exploration.
- Perhaps you were thrown in the deep end with limited support.
Do you know how people in your team and organisation feel? Do they want to contribute their best talent? Are they capable of contributing their best talents?
Leaders, in general, think their people are realising their potential more than what the people themselves would claim. So perhaps we are underestimating the amount of dormant potential in people and our teams?
Think of a time when you worked with someone who truly brought the best out in you. However they did it, you felt compelled to perform at your absolute best; to stretch beyond that of which you thought you were capable, to learn from your mistakes; and to achieved things you never thought possible. How many of those people have you worked with? How many people would count you as one of those people who inspired them to be their best?
